The 7th song F*cking Wit Us is written on a beautiful oriental background. Instrumentally rich , it will make you enjoy Swifty's gun talk. Better not talk shit about Swifty and his D12 fellows. Like the other songs, the track is a lyrical jewel, that I highly recommend to the listeners.

Do Somem has the same somber style. Swifty is writing murder music and it is lyrically highly enjoyable. Hell raiser, the talented artist is determined to bring a lot of darkness into his song. Welcome to the Murda Mitten, the dirty D town. Enjoy Ondre Moore's great talent in creating an unsafe and murderous atmosphere.

On most of the tracks, Swifty and his Fyre Department are dropping some pure heat.

Rap Instruments In Hip Hop Music

Hip-hop music uses samplers, sequencers, drum machines, synthesizers, turntables, and instrumentation. As technology improved toward the end of the 90's it grew from poverty struck ghettos. It came from places where people usually can't afford to buy instruments and music making seemed to be out of the question. Music still seemed to make it out of these places and the phonograph later to be known as the turntable came to be an instrument. Later on digital sampling was used.

Rap Instruments In Hip Hop Music

In the 1980's the digital sampler was first used. Techno began to submerge. Synthetic sounds were preferred over samples but samples where still used.

From the 1990's to present it began to use tons of samples per song along side with the use of the drum machine. Beats were structured, minimal and repetitive. Beat machines began to appear and combined the features of a sampling drum machine with a MIDI sequencer. This became the instrument of choice of many hip-hop producers.

Drum Beat

The Drumbeat is the backbone element of hip-hop music. Some drum beats can be sampled others made by a drum machine and some are a combination of both. Drum kits are also used.

Sampling

Sampling uses a particular recording and personalized to the artists' preference. It is one of the most important elements in genre. When sampling you are copying sections of other songs and rearranging these to the your personal liking. This makes a pattern or a loop. Sampling is now widely used.

Studio

A producer's studio is the place where their music is made. It ranges from a four-track sequencer, a collection of recordings to a high-end studio with sound processing hardware.

Synthesizers

Synthesizers are used to create melody, bass lines, percussion, and sound synthesis. Synthesizers are very common in hip-hop music. Because of budget, and studio size limitations, virtual instruments are replacing hardware synthesizers. Virtual instruments are being used more and more in high budget studios.

Recording

The multi track recorder became the standard for recording. Four track cassette recorders became the more common in home recording studios in the 1980's. Digital ADAT tape recorders where popular in the 1990's but are now replaced by digital audio workstations. DAW's give more editing capabilities, unlimited track capabilities and built in effects. Large commercial studios are not necessary to produce music now.

Vocal Recording

Condenser microphones are the preference for recording vocals because of their wide-response range and high quality. Alternatives to these are the less expensive dynamic microphones that are more durable and used in live performances. Condenser microphones are fragile, expensive, and require phantom power. Dynamic microphones can't pick up the wide range of a condenser and they do not respond uniformly. Even with all the high-end studios with high-end equipment many hip-hop songs were recorded with the most basic equipment.

Digital Audio Workstations

DAW's and software sequencers are popular in hip-hop production. These computer programs make it easier to expand your studio with out using physical room and because of this the costs of a studio a drastically lower.

Live instrumentation

Live instrumentation was not used a lot in hip-hop but still used in a variety of performances. Live hip hop bands pioneered though throughout the 80's, 90's and in 2000's. These bands experimented with the genre and improvisational acts as well.

Instrumental

Instrumental hip-hop has no vocals. The general elements in hip-hop music are an instrumental track and a vocal track also known as "the rap". The artist that creates the beat is known as the producer, the person that creates the rap is the MC.

Instrumental hip-hop doesn't have an MC. The producer has the availability of making more complicated, detailed, and more variety in the instrumentals. Instrumental hip-hop tends to diversify its direction without the focus of an MC.

Instrumental hip hop has not been recognized as a genre and is often cataloged in trip hop, break beat hardcore, drum n bass, old school jungle, down tempo, electronica, or industrial music. Because there is no MC the instrumentals can take off into many directions. Instrumental hip-hop is released in very small labels because up of sample clearances from copyright law ownership causes problems for any label.

Mixing Hip Hop Songs in Your Own Home Recording Studio and Computer

I will begin this article by saying that it is a good idea to have an engineer that specializes in mixing Hip Hop songs be the one to handle the mixing of your home studio recorded Hip Hop songs. There is great value in having another set of ears interpret the sounds & make a mix that sounds good in an environment designed for mixing Hip Hop recordings by a person who deals with Hip Hop mixes on a regular basis. That being said, the purpose of this article is to give the Home recording studio artist some tips, insight, & an overview of putting together a Hip Hop song mix using the software/gear that they already have in their home studio.

Mixing Hip Hop Songs in Your Own Home Recording Studio and Computer

During the tracking phase of the recording process you are/should be focusing on capturing the best recorded tracks on an individual basis, making sure each recorded element is of good quality & recorded at an optimized level with no clipping/distortion. The mixing phase is all about making all those recorded elements blend together & sound good with each other to provide a great sounding & interesting song mix as a whole. At the mixing stage you should focus on how things sound along with each other more than how a piece sounds by itself. If you were to solo an element & tweak the EQ, it may sound better when by itself but when placed in the mix the adjustment might be clashing with another part so always make adjustments in the mix while paying attention to the mix as a whole.

When setting up the mix a good way to make panning choices is to visualize your track separated into each instrument being played by a live musician on stage with the main/lead vocal usually panned in the center. Adjust the panning of each instrument around the stereo field in the locations that you visualize the virtual musician standing while playing the instrument sound. Use reverb effects at various decay/feedback settings to add distance & space to parts while keeping some sounds free of reverb to keep the mix up close & personal. It is a good idea to check your mixes on good quality headphones as this give you an idea of how the different panning setting are working & will let you know if there are any sounds that are not showing up too much on either side of the stereo field.

The bass drum & other bass parts are usually served best in the center as bass tends to be perceived in a mono style so may as well place it so. Lead vocals should be panned in the center with over dubs & adlibs panned at varying locations with slightly lower volume than the lead & with subtle EQ differences. You want your instrumental to be like a form fitting foam bed that your vocal is able to "lay" down into & be embraced by. You do not want your vocal to sound like it was just placed on top of a flat beat. You want your mix to have changes in dynamics, with ups & downs that will build anticipation then release it & so on. Be sure to check your mix on a mono playback device as well to make sure all parts are still heard, if you have any very wide instrument panning you may lose the sound when heard in mono so make adjustments to sound good in mono & stereo. The level on your stereo mix should be Peaked at about -3db on the meter without hitting the red. This will give the mastering engineer the headroom needed to maximize the sound of your song & mastering will bring the level up to the max.

The final mix of all parts should be listened to on as many different types of sound sources as possible such as ear buds, laptop speakers a bookshelf system, and/or a car stereo. The more different sources the better as this will allow you pinpoint any re-occurring problems that may then be fixed "in the mix" Once you have a completed mix that you have done A/B comparisons with commercial tracks and you believe your mix is close enough, you will be ready to enter the mastering stage. If you are a beat maker that has no vocal tracks, you can still mix your beat/instrumental using the same tips/techniques above while saving the vocal mix tips for later.

To make beats there is generally two main ways to do it with a beat program or drum machine beat maker. There is real time programming, and what is called Step Programming. Real time programming is when you just simply press record and hit the pads you want to sound. Every time you hit a pad the computer or whatever machine you may be using will record that hit and sound it off once the pattern loops back around. How long it takes to loop back around depends on the time signature, number of bars and tempo you have set. As the device loops back around you can continue to add as much as you like to what you have already done because the beat machine will remember every time and at what time you hit a pad.

Real time  programming is much easier to do than it sounds. Another way to program is called Step mode programming. It is a bit more harder to grasp and depending on the device you are programming your beat on,it can be a bit challenging. We have found that devices that offer the grid type of step programming seem to work the best and be the easiest to grasp and program on. Sadly, most beat makers do not offer this type of setup, but we have noticed that lately a lot of companies have started using this type of platform for programming. Roland has been using it for a long time, for as long as I can remember, and that's a long time!

Step Programming with a grid simply means you are not recording in real time, like I explained earlier, but it is done while the device is not even cycling, basically the beat machine is just sitting there while you insert what you want to play into a grid at certain points. Once you are finished inserting each instrument at the time point on the grid you choose, then you press play and you will hear what you have done. You can always go back and add to it, either with step mode or in real time, that's a good thing. But what you will be amazed with is how quickly and easy step mode becomes after using it for a little while, trust me, if you use it a bit, with in a week, you could just look at the grid, (if your device offers grid programming), and already know what the beat will sound like before ever hitting play. Trust me, this is not hard to learn.

The Mpc 2500 and 5000 offers grid mode recording and so does cubase based sequencers. Roland drum machines also offer this method, and there are a few more I am sure. Another term used for this type of recording is called step recording...which every program I have come across has, but it is implemented differently depending on the host program or type of beat making machine.

I receive a lot of questions about using free beat making software. I would not advise any one to use free beat making software unless, you are just playing around and are not serious about making music beats. Reason being, every free program I have come across is very limited in what it will or will not let you do as far as making beats. Most of them also have very limited samples and /or will not let you save your project once you have finished. The few that I have run across that are free and do let you save your products, simply lack good sound quality and just don't have that big boy appeal.

There are a ton of beat making drum machines and software beat making products that you could get for your computer. It's best to start with a program that works with your computer, if you have a computer and are low on cash. I personally prefer the hardware drum machines or beat makers by MPC, they in my opinion sound the best and come with more features that are geared toward making beats. They are pricey compared to the software programs you can get for your computer, but if you plan on doing this on a professional level, you will have spent enough money in the long run just getting your computer to sound like a MPC, before you realize it. 

If you are just getting started, it is best to pick a program that is highly suggested by industry professionals, and start learning it. Although some programs start out more optimized for certain types of music, most of the well known software beat makers can be used for almost any style. Anyone who really wants to make beats can jump in and start making instrumentals in a matter of minutes.

Bottom line is anyone can do this if you really want to. Its just a matter of jumping in and getting started. So get to it!

Unfortunately, things weren't moving fast enough for me when I was younger. I went from job to job and I even got a real estate license because I wanted a better life. While I was doing these things, I never stopped loving Hiphop. I learned how to make beats and instrumentals along the way but I just had too many other distractions. Hell, I even bought and sold a few houses but the lack of focus was just killing my enthusiasm to do what I really loved.

Well, earlier this year, I had a life changing experience and I decided to get really focused on one thing and that was making beats. There are more people who are in need of production than need rappers. The rappers even need producers and I am sure the rapper/producer ratio is more skewed toward the rappers!

For me this meant letting a lot of other things go UNTIL I get my "Plan A" right. Once that happens, yes I will pursue other interests but not until then. I can site numerous examples in Hiphop alone of people who started off doing one thing, became successful, then branched out to do other things.
